Seven Christmas Crackers 2/7: 72hrs in the Atlas
Seven Christmas Crackers 2/7: 72hrs in the Atlas
Sick of the sight of winter, 3 other fellow dads/adventure lovers and I headed off to the Morrocan Atlas mountains to see just how much fun we could pack into 72hrs. Turns out, quite a lot. The itinerary was thus; Day One - Attempt not to get knocked over whilst exploring the myriad of alleyways and souks in Marrakech, finishing with a hot bucket of water to the face in a traditional (read ‘rustic’) Hamam. Day Two - Drive into the Atlas, swap car for mountain bikes and a guided day on the trails. Day Three - Drive to the Atlantic coast, don wetsuits and surf. Day Four - Head home with a massive grin.
As we road around the corner, high in the Atlas Mountains, and into another dropping vista we all skidded to a halt and fell silent. From across the valley echoed the midday prayer call. Burnt red earth surrounded a village that clung precariously to the barren hillside, which we proceeded to ride through at break kneck speed behind our very experienced local rider.
Definitely one of ‘those’ moments you have. Africa never fails to suprise you.
